Social Enterprise Unconference – Levin – 15 – 17 February 2019

What

PledgeMe has teamed up with Thankyou Payroll to deliver Aotearoa New Zealand’s first unconference focussed on social enterprise. The event was created to support growing and scaling social enterprises to help each other and build a network for them to grow their impact together.

We know how tiring it is to balance social impact and financial value creation, so we think by learning from each other, we can make this journey a little less lonely and little bit easier.

What is an Unconference? It’s a weekend long residential event that’s more about having awesome people in the room rather than watching speakers on a stage. The agenda is set on the first night by the attendees, where you decide what you want to share and discuss over the weekend, and the event is all about you meeting, connecting, sharing, and learning.

The Social Enterprise Unconference 2019 will be for the people behind social enterprises that have been trading for a few years that want support to take their business to the next level. Off the back of a busy year for everyone, we are excited to get a group together to discuss what’s next for the sector, learn from each other, and hopefully realise we’re not in this alone.

We’re aiming to have a diverse group of attendees that represent the broad spectrum of social enterprise in Aotearoa. To ensure that everyone has the time and space to have meaningful interactions, the number of attendees will be capped at 100. Because we’re limited on space, but know that we all benefit from the strength of a diverse group, we will be selecting attendees based on a range of criteria, however if we have more applicants than spots, we will give preference to those who get their registration form sent in quickly.

Operating Azure at Scale – Auckland – 24 October 2018

What

It’s really easy to get started quickly and go fast with Azure. But what happens when the business starts asking for compliance, security and cost control? In the past this has meant slowing down and implementing large and complex governance frameworks. But now you can have control and go fast with a suite of Azure Governance services and features that were announced at Ignite 2018: Azure Blueprints, Resource Graph, Management Groups and Azure Policy (ARM Policies).

In this talk, Daniel Larsen (Technical Evangelist at Microsoft) will demonstrate the new Azure Governance features in the Azure Portal and CLI (Command line interface), and how to quickly implement pragmatic and sensible policies and controls that keep the business happy without slowing developers down. These great new features have drawn from field experience with some of Azure’s largest customers, so that everyone can benefit from the right amount of control and go fast.

As usual, arrive at 11:30am and get some lunch. The session starts at 11:45am and goes for an hour.

Truth, Justice and the Internet – Wellington – 13 November 2018

What

We have some exciting news – the one and only Vint Cerf (known as the father of the Internet) is coming to New Zealand and you’re invited to hear him speak on an exciting topic in Wellington!

More and more of our time is spent on the Internet and current debate around the globe is often focused on the facts and fictions that people and communities are promulgating online.

An extraordinary international panel will explore integrity in the online world. We want to explore the impact of truth (and fiction) being posted online – for every part of the globe to see and be part of.

We are partnering with the National Library of New Zealand to host this InternetNZ speaker series: “truth, justice and the Internet.”

The international panel is one to impress!

Geek Girls Film Screening With Director Gina Hara – Auckland – 25 October 2018

What

Premiere screening of Geek Girls a documentary film by Gina Hara.

The hidden half of nerd culture.

Geek Girls is the first feature-length documentary exploring the hidden half of fan culture: nerdy women. Although geeky communities have recently risen to prominence as major cultural contributors, very little attention has been directed towards the women who live and work with nerd culture on a daily basis.

Filmmaker Gina Hara addresses this oversight by delving into a world of professional gamers, cute dresses, fake names, and death threats; she follows her subjects through the exhilaration of newfound community and the ennui of ostracization while also exploring her own struggles with her geek identity.

Gina Hara was born in Budapest, Hungary. She is an acclaimed filmmaker and artist with a background in art & technology, interested in the experimental aspects and transmedial forms of visual culture.

For the first time in Auckland, Gina Hara will attend a screening of her documentary Geek Girls for a Q&A after the session.

2018 Dollhouses & Miniature Show & Sale – Palmerston North – 20 – 22 October 2018

What

Members of Miniature Clubs all over New Zealand bring their work together every 2 years and show it off. Doll Houses, Miniature items, Room Boxes.

The fascination of miniatures lies in viewing life made small. Most of the displays are in 12th scale ( 1 inch – 1 foot) but some are even smaller. We have a lot of talented miniaturists in this country and this is a chance to view their work altogether.

There is a completed doll house, which has been donated and worked on in a voluntary way, by members of the Lower Hutt and Kapiti Miniature Clubs. This is being raffled over the weekend. The exhibition is a large one and well worth the visit. The venue has a cafe on site and good parking and wheelchair access.

There are also sales tables of miniature items or tools if you want to get started on an absorbing hobby.

This event is hosted by the Lower Hutt Miniature Makers and the Palmerston North Miniaturists. The Lower Hutt Miniature Makers meet every third Saturday of the month. It is around 45 members strong.

They usually work on a workshop put together by one of the members. It could be making an item of furniture or small items to go into their small houses. It is a chance not only to meet with friends, but to learn new skills.

There are miniature clubs all over New Zealand. If you are interested please contact NZAME, the parent of all the clubs to find a club near you.
