The Magnificent Mahuki Tech Tour of Te Papa – Wellington – 19-27 May

Exclusively for Techweek, Te Papa and Mahuki are opening the doors to explore the digital technology, past, present and future in the museum. The Mahuki team will be taking groups of 15 people through front-of-house and back-of-house in the museum looking at all things tech in Te Papa!

Talk tech-turkey with graduates from Te Papa’s Innovation Hub, Mahuki, and interact with their ground-breaking exhibition technology. You will be exploring the Museum through a tech lens, seeing our oldest, newest and up-and-coming digital interactives. Our Mahuki team will talk through their favourite exhibition technology and the ideas behind their conception. You will also be seeing the Innovation Hub in back-of-house Te Papa.

Women in Gaming Meetup – Auckland – 19 May 2018

Attack On Geek proudly presents the inaugural women in tech and gaming meetup – let’s form the start of a positive local community!

There is little doubt that women are under-represented in the technology and gaming industry. Attack On Geek, an Auckland based pop-culture, gaming and entertainment brand is committed to challenging the misconceptions surrounding female tech enthusiasts and gamers, as well as building a positive and supportive community for local women in the industry.

This inaugural meetup will be the first, in hopefully a series of Attack On Geek meetups to allow local women in the industry to come together, share their thoughts and ideas, build friendships and support one another.

Tickets are free, and limited to 10 (we have a table booked). You will be responsible to pay for anything you want to eat and drink though!

Hack Tairāwhiti – Gisborne – 19-20 May 2018

Hack Tairāwhiti is a 48 hour Hackathon on the 18th – 20th of May 2018 as part of Techweek 2018. The event brings together New Zealand exporters and the country’s top tech talent together in Gisborne to unlock the region’s potential to support entrepreneurs across New Zealand.

Connecting whanau to the tech venture ecosystem plays a vital role in improving Māori prosperity, which is why Hack Tairāwhiti is so important.

Hack Tairāwhiti is being led by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) in conjunction with Te Tira Toi Whakangao (T3W), together with support from Datacom, global Māori tech companies and Māori sector investors.

Microsoft DigiGirlz 2018 – Auckland – 19 May 2018

What

Microsoft is partnering with AUT to host DigiGirlz. It is an one day event aimed to inspire the next generation of girls to be part of our tech future. We have hands on robotics workshops with OMGTech!, HoloLens experiences and a range of speakers to showcase that technology spans a variety of careers beyond coding and engineering.

DigiGirlz is designed for female students aged 13 – 17 years to:

Get inspired by women and men who made a difference in their fields; Get excited by the jobs of tomorrow related to STEM.

DigiGirlz aims to target this issue by providing hands-on activities to get girls excited about the tech industry. This event will shine a spotlight on careers that involve tech but relate to areas our students are passionate about. Furthermore, the event is about creating a platform for girls to find role models in women who are succeeding in the tech industry, from within Microsoft and from external speakers and panelists. DigiGirlz is an opportunity to make these role models more accessible and their stories more well known. Girls will have the opportunity to converse with them and be inspired by their journeys

ShadowTech Day – Palmerston North – 25 May 2018

What

ShadowTech provides girls in years 9 -11 with an opportunity to experience what working in the tech sector is like, encouraging them onto education pathways that lead into tech sector roles.

The programme connects girls at school with women mentors working in the tech sector, and students spend the day with them at their workplace, learning about the diverse range of jobs available within ICT.

Our objective is to see an increase in the number of girls who choose STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related subjects at a secondary and tertiary level, and ultimately choose a career in technology.
