Game Developers Meetup – Christchurch – 6 December 2018

What

Welcome to the December Game Developers Meetup!

Come along and join us to chat game dev with our special guest speaker, Jordan Carlton from Magic Leap/Weta Workshop, creators of Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders on the Magic Leap One!

—–

6:15 PM – KICK OFF
Welcome to the Christchurch Game Developers Meetup with news from around New Zealand.

6:30 PM – Be they Friend or Foe?
Jordan usually spends her days developing the companion AI character, Gimble, for the Dr Grordbort’s Invaders title on the Magic Leap One. Tonight she’d like to share her learnings and discuss things to consider when developing your AI character – be they friend or foe. This talk will span from the larger base requirements of functional navigation behaviour to the smaller nuances of gaze behaviour. Prepare for a mishmash of discussion of features that she has real life experience implementing and features that she wishes to implement one day.

Jordan was surprised when she emerged from a haze of debugging and realised she had established herself as a game programmer at Magic Leap. An unorthodox use of a psychology degree combined with some well-honed keyboard smashing skills and a dash of moxy contributed to the loveable companion character, Gimble, featured in Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders. In her spare time, she’s a classic Ravenclaw.

7:30 PM – Pizza and Networking
Bring along your games to show and get feedback!

/dev/talk: Insight into Event Patterns – Hamilton – 27 November 2018

What

I’ll be taking us on a deep dive into event driven code, exploring different event patterns and real world implementation challenges. I’ll be talking about the two different types of events – domain events (user actions) and operational events (logs). I’ll discuss some patterns for thinking about event streams, e.g. coalesce, throttle / debounce, grouping by time, count, moving windows of events, projecting.

This is an open event, questions are welcome any time.

This event will be recorded.

As usual pizza and beer afterwards and a big thanks to our sponsors Company-X and Soda.

Kauri Boardgames and Cards: Games evening – Whangarei – 1 December 2018

What

What we’re about

Peter and Suse are keen board and card gamers. We have a collection of mostly “Euro Games”, for example Euphrates & Tigris, Elfenland, Puerto Rico, La Citta, El Grande and many more. We also have some lighter, fun games.

Suggest meetings at our house since it eliminates moving a truckload of games around, we can easily do two tables at a time.
If some members should find it convivial, we could arrange dinners together before an evening’s game(s).

Transport Planning as Freedom Planning – Auckland – 22 November 2018

What

What if we planned public transport with a goal of personal freedom? Join us at Auckland Conversations as we explore this idea with Jarrett Walker, one of the original designers of Auckland’s new bus network.

5:00pm: Networking & refreshments
5:30pm: Start
7:00pm: Finish

The challenge of public transit today is not just having good ideas but being able to explain them.  It’s crucial to integrate the task of planning with the tasks of explanation and of creating leading innovative processes that engage and empower the public. The goal is managing behaviour change in a positive way – changing the way people travel and the positive outcomes that can produce for Auckland.

Jarrett Walker, a popular speaker and author of the popular book Human Transit, is one of the field’s great explainers.  His worldwide transit consulting practice is all about helping communities see their options, and think about their goals, so that they make great decisions for themselves.

We aim to start a conversation here about how transit works, what choices it presents, and how we can use it to create a better Auckland with some real-life examples of change that’s about to reshape the way we use the CBD and beyond.

Eddie Tuiavii, Senior Hearings Advisor at Auckland Council will MC the night. Jarret will also be joined by a panel of industry experts including:

  • Jessica Rose, Albert Eden Local Board member and representative for Women in Urbanism Auckland
  • Daniel Newcombe, Manager Strategic Projects, Central, North & West, Auckland Transport
  • Ludo Campbell-Reid, Design Champion and General Manager Auckland Design Office, Auckland Council
