The Life and Times of Supervolcanoes – Nationwide – July-Sept 2018

What

‘The Life and Times of Supervolcanoes’ with 2017 Rutherford Medal recipient Professor Colin Wilson heads to 22 locations from Invercargill to Kaitaia from the end of July to early September. This nationwide tour is proudly presented by Royal Society Te Apārangi in partnership with GNS Science, EQC and Victoria University of Wellington.

There is no denying that as New Zealand sits astride the Indo-Australian and Pacific tectonic plates our land is subject to tremendous natural forces. We may commonly experience this as a gentle but sometimes a severe shuddering of earthquakes. Yet with Aotearoa dotted with cones and calderas, Kiwis should also keep in mind that the Taupō Eruption was actually the world’s most violent volcanic eruption in the last 5000 years!

Colin Wilson has gathered many accolades for studying volcanoes, and in particular, those giant examples known as supervolcanoes. He likens his work to that of a crime scene investigator, where he travels the world piecing together the dual puzzle of why such cataclysmic explosions occur and why they are joined by much smaller eruptions. He aims to forecast volcanic phenomena with enough warning so that communities can respond. But although Colin is digging deep in the Earth’s crust to find the triggering mechanisms, volcanic systems are not letting their secrets go easily…

  • Why is this important?
  • What is the “Open Data Programme” doing?
  • What does it mean for me?

  • What barriers that Governmental agencies have to overcome in order to open up their data

Auckland Sci Fi: SciFriday – Auckland – 8 June 2018

What

Join us for our regular social meet-up in the city where new and regular members get together for coffee and chat about all things sci-fi, fantasy and whatever geekiness takes the mood.

Newbies – if you’re new to the group and feeling shy, just bring a friend along. You don’t need to be a hard-core sci-fi fan – anyone with a passing interest is welcome and we love meeting new people!

What we’re about

If you are a fan of anything sci-fi, fantasy, superhero or zombie related then this is the group for you! Our current favourites include Dr Who, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Star Trek, Star Wars, LOTR, Big Bang Theory, Supernatural, Firefly, BSG, Stargate…you get the idea!

Meetup events consist of getting together for social nights or to watch scifi shows and movies together; there’s a book club, we run quiz nights, go to karaoke etc – basically we offer a place where you can hang out and argue with other sci-fi fans about all kinds of nerdy stuff that other people just don’t understand.

We aim to be an inclusive group and welcome all genders, ethnicities, beliefs, sexual orientations and ages (note: all members must be over 18). If you don’t feel comfortable with this, then this group isn’t for you.

The Rise of the Microservice Frameworks – Auckland – 14 June 2018

What

Hosted by The Auckland JVM Meetup

Further to our Microservice series, comes the discussion around the rise of microservice focused frameworks that are designed to achieve specific end goals. We will start the talk with by sharing experiences of the positives and negatives of deploying vs writing such services, the increasing ownership that the developers need to take as they take further control down the deployment stack, and this includes techniques for optimising deployments.

We will cover the complexity of deployment and orchestration of monolith vs microservice vs serverless.

We will complete the talk by covering a small number of Microservice frameworks and their pros and cons.

If you have a particular framework that has arisen to address this need you would like to speak about, please contact us and we will try and fit you in!

Speakers: Robin Bygrave, Richard Vowles
