Auckland Science Fiction Book Club: Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfar – Auckland – 10 July 2018

What

What we’re about

This is for all lovers of books – in particular science fiction and fantasy. We’ll meet once a month, on the second Tuesday of the month at a pub so you can have a drink and food if you want to.

We’ll read a variety of books by both male and female authors and try to vary them across different sub-genres eg Dystopian Fiction, Feminist SF, Literary SF, Post-Apocalyptic SF, Short Story Collections, Space Opera, etc.

Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfar

Shortlisted for the Arthur C Clark award 2018

An intergalactic odyssey of love, ambition, and self-discovery

Orphaned as a boy, raised in the Czech countryside by his doting grandparents, Jakub Procházka has risen from small-time scientist to become the country’s first astronaut. When a dangerous solo mission to Venus offers him both the chance at heroism he’s dreamt of, and a way to atone for his father’s sins as a Communist informer, he ventures boldly into the vast unknown. But in so doing, he leaves behind his devoted wife, Lenka, whose love, he realizes too late, he has sacrificed on the altar of his ambitions.

Alone in Deep Space, Jakub discovers a possibly imaginary giant alien spider, who becomes his unlikely companion. Over philosophical conversations about the nature of love, life and death, and the deliciousness of bacon, the pair form an intense and emotional bond. Will it be enough to see Jakub through a clash with secret Russian rivals and return him safely to Earth for a second chance with Lenka?

Rich with warmth and suspense and surprise, Spaceman of Bohemia is an exuberant delight from start to finish. Very seldom has a novel this profound taken readers on a journey of such boundless entertainment and sheer fun.

NZ Success story on a microservice platform – Palmerston North – 28 June 2018

What

The Palmerston North Software Development Meetup is a group for anyone interested in developing software/web stuff and (more or less) related tech

This month we are lucky enough to have Max Dietrich speaking to us about his experiences in building a Fly Buys micro-service platform.

Max was a developer on the Fly Buys redevelopment, moving the platform to a cloud-based micro-service architecture. The platform is based on Alchemy and Advanced Message Queuing Protocol frameworks. Alchemy is a framework for creating highly available systems that are built from micro-services. Alchemy includes service discovery, easy deployment, smart load balancing and is a polyglot, so you can use the best languages to solve all your problems.

Max graduated from Massey University in 2013 and has recently returned home to the Manawatu.

As usual there will be pizza sponsored by Objective and for those who are keen, a trip to Brew Union afterwards.

DevOps Auckland: Intro to OpenStack – Auckland – 18 June 2018

What

Over the past 8 years, OpenStack has evolved from a small collaboration project between NASA and Rackspace into a massive, open source cloud orchestration system. It is now a common solution used by service providers, enterprises, government agencies and academic institutions to build and operate both public and private clouds. We will hear what value OpenStack provides and why it’s popularity took off like a rocket.

Our presenter is Alex Meade, a technical instructor and independent DevOps consultant. He was a core contributor for five years early in the OpenStack project. Alex’s recent work has been focused on DevOps, Docker containers, and the Google Cloud Platform. He currently does all of this while traveling and chasing the elusive work/life balance.

Network device programmability – Lower Hutt – 8 June 2018

What

Network programmability 101 with practical examples

There is significant effort in the industry to make networking equipment easier to install and use, and a large part of the focus is introducing and improving programmability for networking devices – especially for machine to machine interactions and interfaces. Although there is still the need for old-style command-line interfaces and SNMP, the industry is converging on NETCONF/Yang for management.

The Yang data models are not necessarily human-readable friendly, but they do make automation and programmability easier. In the end these enhancements and interfaces should make the entire systems easier to use and monitor. Some programming skills are useful though…

About Lower Hutt software Engineers Meetup

There are 10 types of people in Lower Hutt; those that get nerdy jokes and those who don’t. This is a call for all Software Developers, IT engineers, Software Testers, Scrum Masters, IT Project Managers and Digital Gurus who are keen on discussing interesting topics in Software with other like-minded folk. This group will meet at various locations around the Lower Hutt area, with a loose presentation / open discussion format and with any luck, some free pizza and drinks! We’re always open to new members, presenters and hosts, just contact an Organiser and let them know!
