Code Craft Dunedin: August Meetup – Dunedin – 7 August 2018

What

We are a group of people interested in software development, learning and getting together. The group consists of members of the local IT development and educational community.

The August meeting will be held at the Polytech and we currently have two speakers lined up:

Matt Kraemer: A crash course introduction to machine learning

Matt works with AI and machine learning on a day to day basis and is going to introduce some of the tools and techniques to the group. There has been a lot of interest in these topics within the group so please let anyone you think may be interested know about Matt’s talk.

Thomi Richards: Zapier: What we do, what I do specifically, and how we hire people. Thomi has recently moved virtual companies… something I think is only going to become more common in the IT field and it will be interesting to hear from him on his experiences working for a completely remote organisation.

NZ Success story on a microservice platform – Palmerston North – 28 June 2018

What

The Palmerston North Software Development Meetup is a group for anyone interested in developing software/web stuff and (more or less) related tech

This month we are lucky enough to have Max Dietrich speaking to us about his experiences in building a Fly Buys micro-service platform.

Max was a developer on the Fly Buys redevelopment, moving the platform to a cloud-based micro-service architecture. The platform is based on Alchemy and Advanced Message Queuing Protocol frameworks. Alchemy is a framework for creating highly available systems that are built from micro-services. Alchemy includes service discovery, easy deployment, smart load balancing and is a polyglot, so you can use the best languages to solve all your problems.

Max graduated from Massey University in 2013 and has recently returned home to the Manawatu.

As usual there will be pizza sponsored by Objective and for those who are keen, a trip to Brew Union afterwards.

Network device programmability – Lower Hutt – 8 June 2018

What

Network programmability 101 with practical examples

There is significant effort in the industry to make networking equipment easier to install and use, and a large part of the focus is introducing and improving programmability for networking devices – especially for machine to machine interactions and interfaces. Although there is still the need for old-style command-line interfaces and SNMP, the industry is converging on NETCONF/Yang for management.

The Yang data models are not necessarily human-readable friendly, but they do make automation and programmability easier. In the end these enhancements and interfaces should make the entire systems easier to use and monitor. Some programming skills are useful though…

The Rise of the Microservice Frameworks – Auckland – 14 June 2018

What

Hosted by The Auckland JVM Meetup

Further to our Microservice series, comes the discussion around the rise of microservice focused frameworks that are designed to achieve specific end goals. We will start the talk with by sharing experiences of the positives and negatives of deploying vs writing such services, the increasing ownership that the developers need to take as they take further control down the deployment stack, and this includes techniques for optimising deployments.

We will cover the complexity of deployment and orchestration of monolith vs microservice vs serverless.

We will complete the talk by covering a small number of Microservice frameworks and their pros and cons.

If you have a particular framework that has arisen to address this need you would like to speak about, please contact us and we will try and fit you in!

Speakers: Robin Bygrave, Richard Vowles
